Travelling on a South African passport makes travelling a little bit difficult. I have queued for many hours and days of my life applying for visas. You can't just go on an unplanned weekend away, everything has to be planned months in advance. I've nearly missed holidays where my visa hasn't arrived and my mom has driven 3 hours to Manchester to pick it up on the day I was flying! So the day I got my British passport you can imagine how happy I was. The very next weekend we booked a weekend away to Paris. What an incredible city! We stayed in a cheap hotel in Montmartre. There was a little cafe across the road where we had croissants and coffee for breakfast every morning. We obviously did all the touristy stuff... the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame and the Arc de Triomphe. We sat outside cafe's drinking wine watching people go by, walked through the many parks, visited the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay and Rodin art galleries, took a boat trip down the Seine. We also did a couple of morbid visits to see the Père Lachaise and Montmartre cemeteries (both haunting, beautiful and full of impressive and famous graves) and the Catacombs. I found the food expensive and disappointing but we hadn't done any research before going and landed up eating in mostly tourist traps! I'll do my research next time... It was a wonderful city. One of the best places to just wander around, people watch, just be.
