Delhi - A walking and food tour
Our final stop in India was Delhi. Delhi is actually eight cities in one, each with its own city centre. It is huge and we were only there for one day so we would never have scratched the surface. We stayed at an amazing hostel though that had loads of activities on that you could join... so as soon as we arrived I signed up for their walking tour and street food tour which were both running the next day.
That evening we tried some street food: Panni puri (little hollow balls that you fill with potato and chickpeas and a cold spicy soup and eat whole), Chicken Biryani and Chum chum (a Bengali sweet). We played pool and chilled out in the hostel!
In the morning we joined the walking tour which was run by Vivek. We caught a rickshaw and entered the craziest, most mental, insane streets I have ever seen in my life, I thought I was going to die! We saw the red fort, and lots of different shrines, temples and architecture. We walked through Chandi Chowk, India's largest wholesale market, visited a beautiful house/ shop in a tiny street with beautiful doors and walked through the Khari Baoli spice market. Chris and I went for lunch at the Moti Mahal where I tried Murg Musallam, a spicy dish with chicken, mincemeat, kidney and egg.
In the evening I joined the food tour with a few others from the hostel. We caught cycle rickshaws (these guys work flipping hard!) and our first stop was Kuremal Mohan Lal where we had kulfi stuffed inside a mango. Next was fruit sandwiches at a backstreet place run by two Jain brothers. I had a pineapple sandwich (it had jam, thinly slices pineapple, paneer and pomegranate seeds) and it was actually very good. After that was a giant samosa and lastly we went to a muslim restaurant called Karim's where we had Mutton Burra with tandoori naan. I saw a lot of poverty, more than I had on our entire trip, and I was convinced I'd be ill from the street food tour, which amazingly I wasn't... I somehow got through India tasting all the amazing food without getting Delhi Belly once!
